There can be little doubt that in the 21st century business world, having a significant online presence is integral in ensuring the long-term profitability of any company.

With a high proportion of UK households having round-the-clock access to the World Wide Web, this helps to illustrate the importance for businesses of all sizes to consider the benefits that a company website can bring to its overall turnover.

It's probably safe to say that a company website is one of the first places many consumers visit when shopping for their desired product or service; therefore, the importance of having a usable, informative website cannot be overstated. Furthermore, the costs and practicalities involved in keeping a physical shop-space open 24-hours are negated with e-commerce websites, given that many of the front-end processes are automated. This means that it is possible to remain 'open' 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.

This is why many businesses exist entirely online. Without the additional costs involved in running a physical business such as premises, staff and other overheads, it can be far more cost-effective in the long-term to operate a business from home. This is especially true for smaller companies that are seeking to grow, whilst competing with other organisations within their industry sector.

This doesn't mean there are no costs involved in setting up an online business. For a dedicated e-commerce enabled company website, there is software and technical integration costs, not to mention hosting and other associated outlays.

However, it isn't always necessary for budding businesses to have their own website. The popularity of online auction sites and other e-commerce trading spaces have grown exponentially in recent years, and allow companies to tap into the global consumer community whilst alleviating many of the technical and cost implications of setting up online.

The facility to set up an online business with such ease has actively encouraged many people to start their own company, without the worry of giving up a secure full-time job. By listing products and services on an online portal, many of the processes are managed automatically, which only leaves the business-owner to worry about the invoicing, payments and dispatch of the goods. As such, these tasks can easily be performed in their spare time in evenings or at weekends.

As with offline businesses, the importance of good customer service is integral to the long-term success of any online business. By constantly communicating with the customer through email - informing them of the current status of their order, for example - this will help to bridge the physical gap that exists between the retailer and consumer in the online world.

If a customer is happy, then they are more likely to recommend the Internet enterprise to a friend, which makes the business of selling online all the more easy. In the 21st century business world, every little bit counts towards ensuring continued success in the long-term.
